Gobos Explained

Sounds like a clown, but it actually goes inside a light!

A gobo is a metal or glass disc that fits inside a lighting fixture and allows for the projection of the image on that disc.

There are two main types of gobos. The first is metal. This is simply a piece of high-temperature metal that has had sections laser-cut out of it to make a shape. Think of a stencil that you might have made in art class at school, but much more accurate and much smaller. Because of the makeup of metal gobos, perfect circles are not possible, as they must have a join at some point.

The second type is a glass gobo. These allow for significantly more detail and allow for circles and other shapes. Glass gobos can have multiple layers that allow for multiple colours. Glass gobos are more expensive than metal ones.

Once designed and manufactured, the gobo is placed into a lighting fixture. Where there is a lack of metal or etching the light will pass through and project onto a surface. Gobos can be placed into a range of light fixtures from moving lights to generic lights. Gobos are typically used to project logos and or patterns across surfaces such as walls, furniture areas and other objects such as cars, stands, stages, etc.

  • A great experience from start to finish with Party Doctors. From initial email and calls to on the day support, they went above and beyond, and James was superb throughout. My only regret is I didn't use Party Doctors for more equipment! Rohan, Wedding

  • We used Party Doctors for our daughter's 21st .... so glad we did! From the first meeting with Raj to the execution of the event itself, everything was well organised and very professional. The team take care of everything and are great with ideas and suggestions. All the staff were excellent and friendly and we had a great time on the night. My daughter and her friends loved it and we had loads of positive comments, during and after the party. Would definitely recommend and use again. Thank you to Raj, Dom and all the team Louise Jones Lauren's 21st Birthday
  • We thought the party was fantastic. The marquee looked fabulous from start to finish it's been incredibly easy to deal with Party Doctors and we couldn't be happier with the service you provided. The barmen/marquee builders did a brilliant job and we had so many comments about the music, it was exactly what the girls wanted. I have no hesitation in recommending you to anyone in the future. Vicki Watson, Birthday
  • I wanted to say a personal huge HUGE thank you for what an incredible job you and your team did on Saturday. I've been told it was the best party people had ever been to, by most guests, and I can certainly say I had one of the best nights of my life, and I'm not sure any birthday will ever top it! The silent disco idea was genius. And such a hit with the older crowd. The Le Pard Family, Family Party
